Chapter 16

Jamaica

Okay, so maybe I stretched the truth about my culinary skills a bit, but I was all dressed up to the max for the night and it seemed a shame that it totally became a let down. I quickly stripped from the new dress and got into something casual while Lee was in the shower. I was really glad it wasn’t actively raining, but put on the boots I’d bought earlier in the day. They felt warm, sturdy and I loved them. I decided I might never go back to heels.

Opening the refrigerator I pushed around a few items so as to better see our inventory. Of course, Lee hadn't let me buy the things I was used to, so I would have to make do with what the others had chosen. I would just replace in the morning whatever I had used that night.

I extracted a pound of hamburger; reportedly that was the staple of most middle-class diets. I wanted to leave my world behind and join his.

I looked at the expiration date and then poked a tiny hole in it with my little finger to sniff it. It seemed to be fine, so I decided to use it. What I would make from it still remained to be determined.

Most hamburger meals started with browning it, so I pulled out a skillet and threw the meat in. Another drawer revealed cutlery, so I chose a large spoon and set to work chopping at the block of almost-frozen beef. I peeked back into the refrigerator to see what else might go into it, but set aside the onion right in front of my face. Onions made your hands smell. That didn’t smell terribly attractive—not on your hands or on your breath, in case we came into close contact. Some little thing inside me whirled when I thought about that.

I found a box of spaghetti and threw it in with the browning meat. I figured the grease from the meat would soften the spaghetti, but just to be on the safe side, I added a can of SpaghettOs. Turning the heat on low, I occupied myself with going through the cupboards until I found plates and glasses. I checked the refrigerator and there was to drink was Tim’s six-pack of Nehi grape soda. There wasn’t even milk. I shrugged and pulled two bottles out, setting them alongside two glasses and a fork for each of us. I knew better than to think there might be napkins, so I tore off two sheets of paper towel, although in this case, I think they came from the hardware store and were called shop towels because they were blue. At least they were pretty.

“Something smells good,” Lee said, coming up behind me. I could smell the soap on his skin and feel the humidity that still lingered from his shower. It was a very manly aroma and I reveled in it.

“Thank you. It looks pretty good, and I hope it tastes the same. I’m afraid there’s not much variety on board, so I had to make do with what I had.
